Improve your Value Knowledge for better art INSTANTLY!
We recently had a 3+ hour livestream where a TON of knowledge was shared, and I wanted to truncate it down to a "masterclass" of sorts, based on perhaps my favorite art topic: Values!
We dig into real-time Q&A with the livestream audience, discussing values, the value scale, art school "myths" about value, how color corresponds to your chosen values, calculating bounce light, when to break the rules, and MUCH MORE!
Grab a snack, buckle up, because you're about to partake on a nearly 2 HOUR journey into the fun (and helpfulness) of all-things Value!

Courses are great; Wes is incredible, but at the end of the day you have to do a lot of practice which combines what Wes says with application. Sometimes we get so caught up in courses and tutorials that we never get to practice and we plateau. I'm guilty of that.

Hi Wes, as I prefer the look of traditional art and the more I study using grayscale digitally the more I’m convinced it simply doesn’t work. Traditional artists work with perceived value. This is because you can’t translate a chosen mid tone grey to a color as a color changes value based on the saturation you choose. This is why the colorize mode digitally gives an artificial look to it since it locks luminosity in an attempt to deal with the saturation issue. The other issue is much of this is being learned by importing paintings from old masters and converting them to grayscale. Don’t forget that taking a traditional painting digital is changing its color profile into something a computer understands. We know this doesn’t work by the difference is changing color profiles for print and how that changes our painting. An example of this is using a saturated yellow vs an desaturated yellow. The software is interpreting it as two different values but really it’s one on color not darkened but desaturated. It you tried painting the darker value with a darker Ellet instead of removing saturation the painting would look off. The other issue becomes when a color is only able to reach a given value before it’s hue changes. You know this by color mixing. Also, there is a difference in a computers mathematical conversion to value and perceived value. Perceived value is far more important to understand as this is what painters had to work with. It seems the closest thing we have to work with is the HSLUV color method which as far as I know only Rebelle offers. It seems the best way to work with color and value as it works with perceived value based on luminosity of a color. It isn’t perfect but it is a step forward.

I think that the third thing you spoke of is Impact, or at least that's how i call it. It's related to the message (or intention or story or personal voice, etc) that you want to convey and how you compose/present it before your audience. So it's possibly related to composition which then also relates to design, the difference is, it's not something technical and can be taught through theories, at least not ones that will apply for everybody because it's an individual thing. These things are rarely shared (through social media), because of how personal and arbitrary it can be, but with that said, I hope that you can pull it off and not stop sharing. Anyway, this is just me thinking along with you as I am also searching and thinking a lot about my own art for the past couple of years. I like what you are doing here, sharing thoughts and questions like this and I am curious as to how you are going to answer them. Don't stop sharing man. Cheers.

I think you hit the nail on the head! It's important to share the more "intimate" parts of the creative process, as everyone has to go through that, and it's VERY easy to fall into the trap of thinking that nobody else has to deal with those. It's easy to find a ton of "technique" videos and "tips and tricks" type things, but trying to put words to the more esoteric art things can be a bit harder. In fact, it was hard to even put words to the ideas themselves LOL. Many thanks for the great comment!

I wished more people would get that in art forms like Manga or comics, the plot and characters, and framing, are much more important than the art itself. I have read many technically beautiful Manga in the past whose story was just meh. But no, artists have to be perfect to the last line, I can't tell anymore how often I see people downtalking e.g. a Manga series due to it's artstyle because it is so ugly but they don't even think about how much of an effort it takes to do not only draw one picture but a whole sequenced story.... I want to produce my own Manga someday but this fear of not being good enough is holding me back so much. I am still no master at realism so I don't allow myself to draw what I really want to ("Master the fundamentals"). I was really brainwashed the feeling hat if I am not able to do an artwork for e.g. Magic the Gathering I am not allowed to do manga. I should really just take out my sketchbook and draw with my pencils again though

Thanks for a really insightful discussion, Wes. What resonated with in me in particular was that looking for the triangle/trifecta around the binary of imagination and realism. To me, it feels like you're talking about abstraction, in the fundamental sense of the term wherein the essence of visual communication lies in emotion, intuition, and -- like you said -- "energy" . This is opposed to realism that at its core can be empirically measured like with the exact dimensions of a human head or sight sizing. But abstraction as a concept has no need for such exactitudes, and even the ambiguity in its terminology speaks volumes of it as an artform unbound by convention. Understandably, this makes it a hotly debated point of discourse in most fine arts circles and ateliers. But I think abstraction exists not in absolutes but in degrees, like a spectrum along imagination and realism. Artists like James Gurney pull reference and inspiration from real life to create fantastical settings infused with wonder, and others like Carolyn Anderson and Yuming Li evoke that through their remarkable brushwork. But there's always an element of abstraction that speaks (in romanticized terms) to the "soul" of the artist and hopefully resonates with the audience as well. But like learning another language, abstraction is different from how art is traditionally taught and requires a shift in both skillset and artistic perspective. Perhaps that would mean cultivating one's unique sense of intuition (before it was overridden with mandates of what art *should* look like) would be a form of going back to the basics? Hopefully that makes sense

I liked your pen, marker and paper piece the best. I think like me you have a little bit of a perfectionist mindset, with a need to "fix" stuff. Which is all good after you have your imaginative stuff down on the page... whatever medium you're working in. I can do it but I struggle with that initial imaginative splurge where you shouldn't literally care, or even think beyond a basic concept when getting stuff out there. That's where the magic lies in any truly creative work. You watch Kopinski with a pen and initially there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the lines he's putting down. I'm sure there is but I think for him its literally unimportant. Afterwards the ordered mind comes to the fore. In writing, "stream of consciousness" exercises have given me the best results once I've ordered the madness. From a famous perspective, The Beatles "Yesterday" started out as "Scrambled Eggs" with some snatches of unrelated melody. I guess if you were to call the third sense maybe name it a bridge conceptually. You want to bring order to the madness you've laid down but you don't want to lose the magic of your initial chaos. An example would be adding structure to a gesture drawing but keeping the concept of the initial gesture. I don't know if thats what you're talking about but I think its part of it. From a Taoist viewpoint I guess it more about balancing in a Yin Yang sense

Posterizing your reference into the number of values you want will help with the method you are trying to accomplish. You’ve mentioned in other videos you are more of a painter and don’t really draw much. I think this is why this method is a bit foreign to you since it is taught in academic drawing. If you look up Jeff watts gouache painting you will see that every painting begins with a drawing with value maps. The value maps are the value shapes he decides to use. These shapes are also known as an artists “calligraphy’ and are one of the most important parts of doing this as the shapes must be attractive. One reason he teaches this in gouache before using oil paint is the lack of ability to blend. When working with harder edges you can’t hide poorly designed value shapes but you can go back to soften edges as needed. Once your value shapes are complete you can do some really cool stuff with combinations of warm and cool colors in those value shapes. I have some really good resources I’d be willing to share. If you’re interested reach out to me

I'm still getting used to Rebelle, which at some point, would like to make my main app. I love using wet in wet painting and Photoshop fails miserably there. The mixer brush is abysmal for that and hasn't been updated...ever, I don't think! Of CSP and Paintstorm, which of the two has better wet paint usage and has a more painterly feel. Thanks!

Oh mannnn, such a good question! So for both wet paint AND painterly feel, I'd give the slight edge to Painstorm, but CLIP has this great hybrid thing of having brushes that feel like Photoshop brushes, but ALSO having smoother, more "wet paint" feels with them with just a few adjustments. Think of CLIP as a "Photoshop + automatic Mixer Brush with better performance" and Paintstorm as a true "these brushes are shaped and feel more traditional" with the blending and impasto. You can't go wrong with either one!

In places like Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and to a lesser extent France and Italy, people sell derivative work, but it's mostly out of love for the original project. Economically their systems are setup to facilitate smaller artists, in Japan their printing companies are so efficient and capable of working with independent artists, you can order 500 copies of a 20 page book the week before a major convention and have them deliver it there on site, day of and have it cost about 150 bucks.

comics/graphic novels should be done in CSP to begin with.

After looking at the built-in templates and formats that come with CSP, I completely agree!

I'm a current user of CSP Pro 2. I love the texture brushes etc. Is it worth me getting Rebelle? I'm not sure. Perhaps only for watercolor?

I mean, if the watercolor engine from Rebelle looks really cool to you, it's a TON of fun and would be 100% worth it, I think. There's times I'll just open Rebelle to use the wet paint stuff (like watercolor drips and impasto blending) on a piece I may render in another program. It's that good!

The trap of familiarity is a huge problem for everyone and must be overcome if there ever is to be any positive change. Good topic and video, Wes.

I love Krita and MyPaint so much, those is my daily drivers in terms of art programs! (I just don't use Photoshop anyways because I am a Linux user and my PC probably won't handle it)

I use free version of ps, it doesn't have ai wich is a shame. I use ai for learning purposes. Affinity is nice tool, even better

Between not owning any software, sketchy AI stuff, and early cancellation fees I can’t wait until my photoshop subscription ends. I just figured out today you can use the .ABR brush format in affinity photo so I’m pretty happy about that since I happened to pick up affinity earlier this year. Edit- and just heard Wes say there are compatibility issues so I might have to bite the bullet and get Clip studio. 😅

From your recommendation switched to rebelle 7 pro and Im never looking back. So much fun to use and i know nothing about how traditional brushes work especially with different types of canvases (would be a great video idea) It takes a bit of tinkering but now I just find myself in a zone just trying things and learning. Keep up the great work, your videos help me tremendously.

Thank you so much for your kind words! Yeah, Rebelle is GREAT at being a place that you can just spend hours, having a blast and learning in the process. It's like everytime I open up the software, I'm seeing or learning something new!

Adobe really on shambles becouse of pushing AI stuff, is like loosing your business for getting into nfts lol

It's truly insane. I mean, okay, are you trying to put yourself out of business (because if people can just generate images, why would you need to edit them with Photoshop?), or are you banking on becoming the "Creative Cloud" for AI, alongside something like Midjourney that also has a subscription? I'm not sure what Adobe's angle is lately, and frankly, I don't think THEY know what their angle is, either.
